Book: Alice Elizabeth Chase, A Work of Art

Dates: Sunday, March 29

Time: 3:00 pm

Location: Micah Chapel, tea and cookies after the talk

On more than one occasion, a cadre of First Church members have taken a field trip to a rustic 1886 cottage perched on the rocks of Branford Point. The excursions usually began with a morning at the Yale University Art Gallery and concluded with bag lunches being consumed on the “piazzas” of this “Chalet Sur Mer.” Over the years, this seaside cottage has also been the site of First Church staff retreats. An even greater “claim to fame” for Chase Cottage was its serving as the three season home of the first woman to teach undergraduates at Yale University. After being appointed Docent of the Yale Art Gallery in 1931, Alice Elizabeth Chase began teaching Yale students in 1943.

David Taylor – first cousin once removed to “Miss Chase” – has recently written a short biographical sketch about this trailblazing Ivy League educator and about her life at the cottage. He will offer a presentation and discussion of what he has written – and the process of writing it.
