Dear Friends,
Earlier this week a church member asked when I was going to preach about hope. We talked about the state of our country and the world and how we longed for positive and hopeful words and stories. After our discussion, I went to my mailbox in the office and took out the bulletin for Sunday’s service, and on the cover, there is this quote by Jane Goodall. “Hope does not deny the evil, but is a response to it.”
Just a couple of days ago I read a reflection about Jane Goodall by Rhett Ayers Butler. “Jane believed hope was not simply a feeling but a tool. Hope, she would tell me, creates agency. The larger the crisis, the more powerless people feel. But small, local victories prove that change is possible.”
There will always be challenges in our lives and in the world, but as faithful people, we are called to hold onto hope. When we come together to worship, serve and learn together, most of us leave feeling more connected and hopeful. This Sunday we will gather at 8:00 a.m. in the Micah Chapel and 10:00 a.m. in the Meetinghouse and online), and we hope you will join us!
The bulletin, large print bulletin and announcement slides are available on our website. You can watch any of our livestreamed or recorded services on our YouTube channel.
One of my favorite quotes by Archbishop Desmond Tutu is about the importance of hope in our lives. “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” May our community continue to be a beacon of hope in our hurting world.
Peace,
Kate
