Join us for Confirmation
Each year brings something new and different – new opportunities, new challenges. We are sure you’ll be living into that as you begin a new year in high school. This letter is to let you know about an upcoming opportunity for you here at First Church – the choice to take part in the Confirmation process. We understand that this is an important conversation and decision for each family.
Our Confirmation program aims to help young people explore and articulate their faith as they prepare to affirm their baptism and become adult members of First Church. Together, we will be using a combination of service projects, mentoring relationships, activities, worship leadership and structured class time to explore our own personal faith. We’ll also talk about the church, our denomination (United Church of Christ) and the world in which we live, as we ponder the big questions of – Who am I, what is important to me, what do I believe, and where do I belong?
We cordially invite you to take part in this year’s Confirmation program and would like to share more information at an opening meeting for prospective confirmands and their parents on Wednesday, September 18, at 7:00 pm in the Micah Chapel. Confirmation classes will begin on Sunday, September 29, from 4:00-6:00 pm. This is an important decision for each young person, and we ask that if you enroll in Confirmation, that you take that commitment seriously and make attendance a priority.
When are classes?
Our Confirmation classes will be held roughly twice a month. We meet on Sundays from 4:00-6:00 pm.
Review the letter mailed in August for more details and contact David Taylor at truebloodtaylor@gmail.com or Kate VanDerzee-Glidden at katev@glastonburyfirst.org with any questions.
Fellowship outside of Confirmation
In addition to Confirmation, First Church offers a program for high school students called Senior High Fellowship. In SHF, students learn, play and serve together. Even if you’ve tried out Junior High Fellowship while in middle school, SHF is different, and we encourage you to join! Senior High Fellowship meets Sunday evenings during the school year from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
(Parenthetically, one of the confirmation “requirements” is to attend at least 8 meetings of Senior High Fellowship this fall – to be a Christian means to be in “community” with other Christians.)
On your Confirmation Calendar, you’ll also see several of our key youth events listed – such as our SHF Retreats and our Youth Mission Trip. While these are not required to be confirmed, we believe these offerings powerfully add to our Confirmation program, and we strongly encourage our confirmands to attend.
We look forward to this journey we will be on together and we thank the parents and mentors in advance for their participation and support.
To the prospective confirmands, thank you for your willingness and we’re excited to explore together!
