We had an inspiring evening with the talented Battle Brothers and Dr. Jonathan Berryman, Organist. All with a diverse education background from the academic fields of science and social work to the performing arts of choral, opera, and vocal music, they impressed our audience with their awesome voices and gifted musicianship. They performed a program of Sacred, Sacred Classical, Classical, Spirituals, Show Tunes and Contemporary selections. One of the featured solos was “Dance with My Father” by Luther Vandross – a tribute to dads.
The town of Glastonbury was highlighted in the premier performance of C. Leonard Raybon’s “Hannah and Her Daughters,” sponsored by Connecticut Museum of Culture and History, Historical Society of Glastonbury and Social Justice Team of First Church, Glastonbury. This work, inspired by the historical writings of Glastonbury’s native daughter, Hannah Hadassah Hickok, from her 1784 journals comprises a set of twenty pieces performed by soloists and musicians from the Hartt School of Music and the Chancel Choir of First Church, Glastonbury. From New Orleans to Glastonbury, Leonard Raybon, Associate Professor of Music at Tulane University, is committed to educating and inspiring audiences by this Sacred Nine Project whose focus is to shape a future America by “engaging with music, texts or events from an earlier America.” To learn more about Sacred Nine Project, visit sacrednine.com and listen to the Sacred Nine Project podcast.
Our Chancel Choir and soloists, along with the Cantate Choir, presented their Broadway Extravaganza program to the public as part of the Music at the Meetinghouse series. The music featured Broadway hits from The Music Man to Disney favorites. Popular selections highlighted a central theme of Love and Hope in a New World of Change. Audience participation was encouraged!
