Betsey Polglase - Minister of Pastoral Care + Visitation

Updated: Apr 22

About Betsey

Betsey was born and raised in New jersey, but has been coming to Connecticut all her life, because her grandparents lived here, her parents retired here and her sisters returned here when they graduated from college. Raised in the Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains, NJ, church was an integral part of family life. Betsey was always part of the children’s choirs, and, as a teenager, part of a folk singing group. Betsey is well-rooted in family, church, and music.

Betsey married shortly after earning her Associates Degree in liberal arts at Colby Jr. College in NH. After several moves, she and her family settled in Middlebury, CT where she was very active in the Middlebury Congregational Church for 30 years. It was there that she eventually felt called to ordained ministry. She completed her BA with a focus on religious studies and social justice at Saint Joseph College, in West Hartford. Betsey earned her MDiv from Andover Newton Theological School in 2009 and was ordained in May of 2010 when she was called to be the minister at Columbia Congregational Church in Columbia, CT where she served for 9 years.

In 2019 Betsey joined First Church as the Minister of Pastoral Care and Visitation with a focus on the senior members of this faith community. She has always been drawn to the elderly for their wisdom, freedom of spirit, and life-stories. In addition to this role, Betsey continues her love of music by joyfully singing in the Chancel Choir.

Betsey finds First Church to be refreshing in welcoming all and offering ways for each to use their gifts, talents and passions for reflecting God’s love into the community and the world.

Betsey enjoys reading for pleasure; tending her potted plants; playing cards and board games; walking and enjoying nature, identifying birds (by sight or by song), as well as, plants and flower.
