Biography Book Club

The next meeting of the Biography Book Club will be
TUESDAY, September 16, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in the church library. The book to be discussed is My Grandfather’s Son: A Memoir by Clarence Thomas. This book has been very favorably reviewed and is a fascinating memoir of how the current Supreme Court justice overcame his abject poverty to rise to his current heights with the help of his maternal grandfather.

All are welcome to join this discussion, even if this is the only meeting you wish to attend. Please call Don McNiel (649-6752) for more information.

Thursday Morning Book Group

The June selection for the Thursday Morning Book Group is Eva LaPlante’s biography of her ancestor Samuel Sewall—Salem Witch Judge. This is an extension of the May 19 Biography Reading Group’s May selection. (It is NOT a prerequisite to have attended the May 19 session)

"Men think ‘tis a disgrace to change their mind…But there is not a greater piece of folly than not give place to right reason"—Samuel Sewall, January, 1689. Our country was not even a country in 1689. Men (and families) left England to find freedom, but naturally brought what they knew with them. Our Congregational (UCC) ancestors were in leadership positions and spoke out for what they believed to be God’s will.

Come and explore the world of pre-Revolutionary America through the diaries of Samuel Sewall and the research of Eva La Plante, Samuel’s sixth great grand-daughter.

The Thursday Book Group meets from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the church library. All are welcome. Come for one, several or all of the sessions. Questions: please call Flo Fisher (633-8005).
