• Recruiting teachers and child care volunteers for the 9:30 a.m. summer program.

• Providing and maintaining a library for the Church community.

• Sponsoring seasonal programs.

• Overseeing the church school mission projects.

• Organizing Vacation Bible School during the summer.

From the Annual Report:

This past year has been an exciting and successful one for the Board of Christian Education. The Board was complete with fifteen members and ready to go for the new year. The members were: Heather Aselton, Leslie Donovan, Shannon Jeroszko, Amy Thompson Jones, Jen Kernison, Robin Kohs, Carol Kimmel, Katharyn Laudone, Kate Lawes, Kate McDonald, Linda Sill, Melissa Thompson, Karen Vigeant, Laura Wildman, Tim Wildman, Joyce Young, and Jo Clair and Kyle Kulas as youth reps.

Within the board, each individual has a particular assignment. The entire board assists in many of the activities and events throughout the year, but each activity has one responsible individual that assures the activity is complete. By identifying each individual and their role, an overview of the year should occur.

• Heather Aselton was responsible for the small class mission projects as a Mission Project Specialist. Each class decided on their own charity they wanted to assist. These charities ranged from collecting cat and dog food for animals in a shelter to collecting food for a children’s food pantry.

• Leslie Donovan served as the liaison for Vacation Bible School as a Summer Coordinator. A very successful Good Samaritan week occurred with over 70 children and many volunteers. The children aged 4 through 5th grade participated. Several of the volunteers were also children in the 6th grade/high school age. The children rotated through areas including games, music, arts/crafts and mission all while learning the story of the Good Samaritan. She also served as the co-secretary.

• Shannon Jeroszko was responsible for the large mission project as a Mission Project Specialist. The church-wide mission project was The Backpack Project in coordination with Foodshare. The Backpack Project is a program where food is sent home with 50 children (in backpacks) for the weekend. These children were identified as individuals that received assistance with school lunches as well. At the time of this report, over $7,800 was collected for the project. Each classroom learned about helping others by contributing to this mission project. The children decided how they wanted to collect funds for the project. Members of the board and their families also assisted in filling the backpacks once per month. It was a very fun and rewarding experience for those who had the opportunity to assist.

• Amy Thompson Jones served as the Vice Chair. This means she will be the chairperson next year. She also organized the snacks and devotions for our meetings during the year. It is a nice way to start a church meeting with a devotion and snacks are always appreciated!

• Jen Kernisan served as the Summer Coordinator for summer church school. Each week over the summer there are opportunities for the children to rejoice in and learn more about God. Church school is available for three-year-olds through eighth graders. The curriculum is set up via a rotation model, and the theme this year is "Respect."

• Robin Kohs was the Budget Organizer. She was responsible for assuring the board operated within the budget. Even with the reduced budget this year, we are currently running under budget.

• Carol Kimmel was the Recruitment Specialist. She assisted in getting the multitude of volunteers it takes to run the Church School program. She also served as co-secretary, responsible for minutes of the meeting so that we can keep track of all the great things the board is doing.

• Katharyn Laudone assists with the library and is known among us as the Library Wizard. The board is also responsible for keeping track of books in the library. Katharyn spends some time each month organizing the library. She also determines if there should be other books added to the library collection.

• Kate Lawes served as Co-chairperson. She was responsible for attending council meetings, running the board meetings and assisting the Associate Pastor of Christian Education and Family Life Ministries.

• Kate McDonald served as the Safety Guru. With so many volunteers working with children, the church must do their best to assure the teachers are safe. Training occurs for the teachers highlighting how to be safe with the children. The individual also assures that first aid kits are maintained in all classrooms.

• Linda Sill served as Co-chairperson. She was responsible for attending council meetings, running the board meetings and assisting the Associate Pastor of Christian Education and Family Life Ministries.

• Melissa Thompson was the Childcare Liaison. Infants through age 3 are also part of the program. There is a paid staff member for this area and yes, more volunteers that care for the children of this age group during church services.

• Karen Vigeant was in charge of the Advent Workshop as a Project Coordinator. This long-standing tradition is a time when families can come to celebrate the season of Advent. Highlights were the many craft projects highlighting our church theme. There was also food and a puppet show. South Park residents are always invited and were in attendance at this successful event. She also was the Welcoming and Outreach Coordinator. When there are visitors to the church with children, our board follows up with them. We send them a note letting them know how happy we were that they were visiting with us.

• Laura and Tim Wildman took on a big job this past year in redesigning the Lenten Family Workshop as Project Coordinators. There had been a format followed for the past three years and it was determined that a new format should be considered. This year on Palm Sunday a Family Seder Meal took place. It was well received and nice that it was an event that individuals of all ages could attend.

• Joyce Young assisted with the Advent Workshop as well as the Advent giving opportunities as a Project Coordinator. Another wonderful tradition is collection of items in honor of baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve church services. Children and other members of the congregation donate baby items which are donated to the Manchester Family Services. Boxes and boxes of diapers, baby food and products were collected. Also during the Advent season, a giving tree is set up. Donations of hats, mittens and gift cards that can be used by individuals in the community needing the services of Glastonbury Family Services were able to use the donations to help celebrate their Christmas.

• Jo Clair and Kyle Kulas were very helpful as Youth Representatives. They assisted in many of the events and were helpful in getting a different (younger) point of view for some of our initiatives.

In addition to the specific activities occurring throughout the year, Church School lessons were taught for children age 3 through 8th grade. Each week, an army of volunteers teach the children stories of the Bible and community.

Our puppet and dance troupes have continued to meet on Sunday mornings. Kelley Philbrook, our volunteer church school superintendant, makes sure everything runs smoothly.

Something new that we added this year was a CE board volunteer. Each week a member of the CE board assisted by checking in with teachers and assuring that the classrooms were ready for children. This helped Kate focus more on worship. Next year should be exciting as we are changing the curriculum over to the rotation model.

This year Kate added a fellowship time at the end of each board meeting. It really added a sense of community as the members of the board had the opportunity to reflect and share with each other.

I have been honored to be a part of this very busy and successful board over the past several years.
